Chapter

Twenty-One

The following day I closed the shopfront half an hour before Olivia was due to arrive to escort me to see Isabelle. I was nervous; I’d seen Isabelle at least a dozen times from a distance but hadn’t been face to face since the change. I needed to remember that I wasn’t dropping in to see the granddaughter I loved passionately but meeting the most powerful elf within a thousand kilometres, if not more. After making sure my clothes and armour were all clean, I set up a few traps in the storage area then showered and dressed.

At nine, Olivia knocked then stepped inside. Seeing I was ready, she said, “Lady Ida, three more guards are waiting outside. It is two less than those provided by High Lord Alistair, but it should be a safer journey during the day.”

From her grin, I assumed she wasn’t so much sending a message that Simon knew where I’d been as warning me that he did. “I should hope so; however, I would have thought the main reason was the quality of the guards.”

“That goes without saying. High Lord Simon assigned another two guards to stand watch outside while you were away.”

“I do appreciate that thoughtfulness, and I’ll be sure to thank him. I would suggest that if they hear several loud sounds inside or even screams, that while they might secure the perimeter, it would be wise not to enter in case one or more of my burglar alarms fails to be tripped.”

Olivia didn’t respond except to step aside to talk with two guards standing several meters away. When she returned, she started a light conversation on everyday things, which we kept up for most of the trip to Isabelle’s spire. Olivia led the way to a private elevator. She explained the meeting was on the sixty-first floor, and there was a space near the exit where I could leave the armour. Isabelle and Simon were waiting further in at a living style area used for more intimate meetings like this.

The plan made sense, so I was surprised when both Simon and Isabelle were waiting several meters from the lift when it arrived at the sixty-first floor. Before we stepped from the lift, Simon said, “Lady Olivia, I do apologise to you and Merchant Ida for this change of plans, but High Lady Isabelle was interested in seeing Ida’s armour.”

I took two steps forward to leave the lift then said, “High Lord Simon, High Lady Isabelle, I am at your service.”

Up close, Isabelle was even more beautiful than I remembered. Time had deepened her features, and while it had added elegance, it had not diminished her flawless complexion and the stunning mix of features she’d got from her parents. If I was to be somewhat boastful, I’d say she had my eyes, which on her was part of a matching suite of components, while on me, they had been my best feature. Isabelle had mastered the art of presenting herself as someone in complete control of herself and everything in her vicinity.
